How to calculate cement tiles for a room

Multiplying square meters by tiles per meter is only a starting point. A decorative pattern also depends on grid placement, cuts, orientation, special pieces and an appropriate reserve for the project.

Decorative cement tiles arranged for an installation calculation

Draw the real outline

Record recesses, projections and material transitions. For an irregular shape, the surrounding rectangle does not represent the surface that will actually receive tile.

Place the grid before counting

Moving the origin changes the number of full tiles and the cuts. In a decorative pattern, a leftover piece cannot always be reused without breaking continuity.

Separate coverage from reserve

Coverage includes the full tiles and required cuts. Reserve is added afterward for selection, breakage, maintenance and site conditions. Confirm the percentage with the installer and Sales.

Frequently asked questions

Why can the result exceed area × tiles per meter?

Net area alone does not reflect cuts, orientation or pieces that cannot be reused without breaking the pattern. Reserve is shown separately.

Which reserve percentage should I use?

Room shape, pattern, cuts and site conditions determine the appropriate reserve. MD Planner lets you adjust the percentage; the final number should be confirmed for each project.

Does the calculation replace an installer?

No. It is a planning tool. Survey, substrate, slopes, joints and the final order require project review.
